History
As with many other natural cats, one can only speculate about how the Maine Coon cat has arisen. There are many legends thereon.
One is that the Maine Coon cat is the product of a mixing between a cat and a raccoon. However, this is genetically impossible.
Another version, the most romantic is that a sailor named Samuel Clough, would smuggle Marie Antoinette from France to Wisconsin in the U.S.. She was beheaded before the escape, but Captain Clough had her belongings with him to America, and among them there were 6 longhairs. These would have to have laid the groundwork for the Maine Coon cat.

A third version is about a sailor named Coon, who is said to have brought the Angora and Persian cats back home to America's east coast, then began to appear long-haired kittens up in many of the litter that was born. These cats were called Coon's cats, and later Maine Coon cats.

The truth was probably more that the Maine Coon cat is created of mixing several different types of longhairs, as Maine's sailors brought home.

These may have been Norwegian Forest Cats and Angora cats, but it is only guesswork.

Maine Coon cat is simply another proof of that the method most likely survive. It is a working tax equipped to fend for themselves in harsh environments.
Exhibition terms were Maine Coon cat was already popular in the 1800s. In 1878 you could at an exhibition in Boston see a dozen of the breed. In 1895 at Madison Square Garden, it was a Maine Coon, who was Best in Show.

Shows
In the early 1920s the breed vanished from the American exhibitions because Persian cats and other exotic cats brought to the U.S. from such as Europe, meanwhile, had become more interesting than the Maine Coon.

Therefore, it was hard times for the Maine Coon cat.

In 1959 the breed was declared extinct in 1973 and a newspaper wrote that breed simply did not exist.

It did so greatly thanks to the stubborn breeders faith in this matter and then was the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association MCBFA) founded in 1968.

Then took all the American clubs Maine Coon cat into cat circle again, ie for approval, registration, and with the right titles.

l United States, there are 5 standards for Maine Coon cats standard with diversity cat, and with FlFÈ's standard it becomes sixth There is therefore no wonder that they easily become confused by the wide variation in appearance. The standards are similar but in a few areas, they are so different that they result in different appearances. The Americans themselves say that they just want Maine Coon cats capable nature written, so there is room for diversity, for in nature there is great variation in appearance. But the basic things must be present, such as size, length of head and body, and coat quality. FIFÈ which Denmark is a member, approved in May 1993 new standard that has been developed in cooperation between Denmark, Holland and Germany, and this standard came into force. First January 1994.

State of Maine has declared the breed for state cat, and the count determined to be a national treasure, which is highlighted at every opportunity. At cat shows is that after Perserkatten, the race being represented by the largest number of cats on display.

Polydactyl
In the "native" population of Maine Coon cats cats are polydactyl (supernumerary toes), a very common sight. In fact, approx. 30-40% of the original Maine Coon cats cats have supernumerary toes. These include an entire colony based in Ernest Hemingway's house in Key West, Florida. Since the U.S. was seeking approval of the cat as a cat, presented therefore two standards: one for supernumerary toes and for ordinary, but we were advised not to seek the approval of the supernumerary toes as it would be difficult enough just with the ordinary. then they "dragged" out the supernumerary toes, but this it is was not enough, as several of the 'old' breeders still breed on supernumerary toes, hoping, that in not too distant future, getting them approved so they can be exhibited in their own group. There are a few in Denmark, which has "polydactyl cats" and each has made agreement on the breeding and registration of cats. It is a completely harmless mutation, but there is opposition to the project. For those who work with cats, there's something special about being able to work with the "original" cat.

Temperament
It is unique in its behavior. It is bold and can sometimes be direct naughty and kitten / youngster is all time in the race. It is fast, flexible and move as a gazelle, even if it is large and heavy. A male normally weighs between 6-8 kg., Females 4-7 kg, of course, there are also heavyweights in the Maine Coon, but they are rare. If you want Maine Coon cats, one must also be aware that they are into
EVERYTHING.

Actually they resemble the dogs in their behavior, and they love human contact. They thrive indoors, but the closed doors will not be tolerated. They get along along nicely with other breeds of cats, dogs, and certainly also with rabbits and other kinds of pets. Another character for Maine Coon cats is that they're scraping the floor, or strikes with its paws in their water bowl before drinking. This behavior is believed to be a relic from their origins as nature cat in the cold regions of North America, since in nature had to beat a hole in the ice in the lakes, to drink or catch fish. And many owners find that they take their food with their paws and eating.

Natural Coat
There are, as in other wild cats difference between summer and winter coat. There may also be differences in coat quality outdoor and indoor scat get stronger, something more oily coat. Although the fur is natural coat which should be able to entertain themselves, there is difference of constantly living outdoors and have bush and scrub to "nest" hair, and to be indoors. It is therefore necessary to outline the cat through time in between, to keep it free of dead and loose hairs especially in the trap over time.
